HOW TO STAND OUT

Scholarship Tips

1

Look close to home

Local scholarships from community groups, businesses, and your family's employers or organizations often have far fewer applicants than national ones. Colleges also offer their own scholarships, including Folsom Lake College.

2

Make your essay personal

Answer the exact question asked, and use a specific story only you could tell. You can reuse parts of essays you've already written, but tailor each one to the scholarship. Proofread, then have someone else read it too.

3

Stay organized

Keep a list of deadlines and requirements, and an up-to-date list of your activities, awards, and volunteer hours. Ask for recommendation letters early, and always give the writer the deadline and a copy of your activity list.

4

Watch out for scams

You should never pay to apply for or find a scholarship, and never share a bank account or Social Security number just to apply. Be wary of anything that "guarantees" money. If something seems off, show it to me before you apply.

5

Say thank you

If you win, send a thank-you letter to the donor within a couple of weeks. Donors love hearing from recipients, and a sincere note can help keep a scholarship going for future students. See Recommended Reading below for tips and a sample letter.
